An XML document like this is said to be well-formed if it respects the syntax exemplified here, with start- and end-tags both present and correctly nested (Burnard 2014, 14).

Well-formed

A document is said to be well-formed if it conforms to the syntactic rules of XML (Burnard 2014, 111).
