of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Coleophora badiipennella (Duponchel, 1843)

A rare and local species in Belgium. Populations are scarce, because of the Dutch elm disease.

The larva lives in a short and stubby case on Ulmus procera and Ulmus minor. Recently the species is also found on Corylus avellana on several locations, so it seems to be this is a new and recent food plant. Pupation in the third and final case, attached to a twig or leaf.

The adults fly in June and July. They come to light.

Belgium, Antwerpen, Ranst, 18 June 2005.
