of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Coleophora kuehnella (Goeze, 1783)

A rather common species in Belgium.

The larva lives in a black pistol-case on Quercus. The final case has a silken cape covering the pistol-case almost completely which make the case look like a bird-dropping. It hibernates and later pupates in the case fixed in a sunny position on the upper surface of a leaf.

The adults fly in one generation a year; onwards from late July towards August. They come to light.
