of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Metriotes lutarea  (Haworth, 1828)

An uncommon species in Belgium.

The larva feeds on the ripening seeds within the capsules of Stellaria holostea. At final instar, the larva spins a portable trivalved case. This is used as a temporary habitation, some larvae may continue to feed from the case while others use it only for protection in their journey to the pupation site. This is usually a tree trunk into which the larva bores, leaving its case attached to the entrance hole.

The adults fly in one generation a year; from the first week of May till June. It flies over the food plant during sunshine and rest on the flowers. Later they come to light.
