of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Pachycnemia hippocastanaria (Hübner, 1799)

A fairly common and local species in 5 provinces of Belgium, mainly known from the Kempen.

The larva lives on Calluna vulgaris. In literature, this species is known to be monophagous on Calluna, but there has been recent sightings of eating larvae on Salix cinerea. Hibernates as a pupa.

The adults fly in two, sometimes three generations a yera; from early March till end August, occasionally till November. They are active from dusk onwards and later come to light.
