of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Eriogaster lanestris (Linnaeus, 1758)

A very rare and very local species in Belgium, only known from a few localities in the southern provinces. Declining!

The larva lives on Crataegus and Prunus spinosa. On most occasions the larvae feed gregariously from a communal silken web. Hibernates as pupa several times.

The adults fly from late February till early April. They are active at night and come to light.

Belgium, Luxembourg, 26 March 2005.
