Calamia tridens (Hufnagel, 1766)

A very rare and local species throughout Belgium. Recent records mainly known from the northern half of our country.It was formerly more widespread.

The larva lives inside the stems of Poaceae or in a cocoon amongst grass blades. Pupation inside the cocoon or onder a stone. Overwinters as an egg.

The adults fly in one generation a year: from early July till end September, but are mainly seen end of July till mid August. During the day they visit flowers, especially thistles. They come to light in small numbers.
