of the Lepidoptera of Belgium

Orthosia populeti (Fabricius, 1781)

A rare and local species throughout Belgium.

The larva lives at first on the catkins of Populus tremula, later between spun leaves. Also reported on other deciduous trees. Hibernates as a pupa in an underground cocoon.

Depending on mild conditions, the first adults can be seen from mid February onwards, but usually they fly from March till May in one generation a year. They come to light and occasionally on sugar.
